Angling

Adjusting the angle of penetration for more pleasure

Tilt a Little, Get a Lot

With thrusting penetration, there’s motion that’s happening anyway. And small angle adjustments can put sweet spots like the clit or g-region right in the path of all the motion and friction. This can mean the difference between ‘not doing anything for me’ and ‘wow’ with every thrust. And these angles work in just about any position.

“I had always thought having sex just didn’t feel good for me and there was nothing I could do about it. Then we discovered putting a pillow underneath my bum which tilts me up :)”

Tilting for More Clit

The distance between the clitoris and the vaginal opening varies a lot from woman to woman. And that distance is highly correlated to whether or not a woman has orgasms from penetration alone—only 18% do. But by tilting her hips so her clit is closer to the base of the toy/penis, a woman can increase the pleasure of every thrust. Partners can do this, too, by angling the toy/penis so that its base touches her clit.

Arch the Back

An easy way to get this angle is to think of arching the back. You can try it now - as you arch your back, you’ll feel your pelvis tilt a bit to compensate.

Pillow in the Arch

A very popular way to get this angle is a pillow under the arch of the back (not under the butt). Once the pillow is there, you can forget about it and no further attention is required. Easy!

Off the Bed

Another way is to hang the butt off the edge of the bed slightly, with a partner standing so the penis/toy approaches the vagina from above, putting the clit right in the way.

On Back, Legs Together

Lying on her back with legs extended and closed together with the partner on top, the penis/toy has to nudge the clit with each stroke as it passes by. This one is especially effective because all other roads to the vagina are blocked except for Clit Avenue.

Perspectives

“I thought I just couldn’t have orgasms from penetrative sex because my clit was way far above my vagina. I gave up on that for many years. Then I found a workaround - I can actually get the clit involved by pushing my clit downward so the penis rubs the bottom of it.”

Variation 2

Tilting for More Top Wall

Many women sometimes love pressure against the top of the vagina. 48% feel a G-region there. To direct the pressure up top, women tilt their hips so the clit moves further from the base of the penis or toy. A partner can do this, too: just approach from lower (further from the clit) so the penis/toy is aimed at the front/top wall of the vagina.

“Tucking under”

Pillow Under Butt

Facing up, a pillow under the butt creates this angle effortlessly. Pillows are convenient and fun because you can pile more and more of them or use harder ones to get just the right height and angle.

Round the Back

Tucking your butt forward also happens when you round your back - kind of like if you were trying to make your nipples approach your belly button.

Perspectives

“I wish someone would have told me about this sooner! Putting a pillow under my butt makes the penis rub against the top wall of my vagina. The difference in pleasure is night and day.”

Variation 3

Getting the Sides

Many women have sensitive, feel-good areas on the side walls. And many just like to change up the pressure to sometimes rub the sides for a while. Angle the penis or toy toward one side by tilting the hips in the opposite direction. For more pressure on the top left, tilt the hips down and right. Or, think of the vagina as a clock—for more pressure at 9 o’clock, just tilts the hips toward 3 o’clock.

“Raising one side up”

Leaning on Top

When a woman’s riding on top, she or the partner can lean to one side so the penis/toy presses the opposite side.

On the Back, One Leg Up

Many women love to be on their backs with one leg up in the air—the partner can even hold it in their elbow or over their shoulder. For more pressure on the right wall, lift the left leg up; for more on the left wall, lift the right leg. To make it more intense, bring the raised leg across the body.

Pillow Under One Cheek

Pillows work to direct penetration to the sides, too! Just put one under the opposite butt cheek in on-the-back positions.

Perspectives

“It used to be awkward for me because the penetration I like best - which is pressure against the shallow side walls - isn’t what gets my husband off. We figured out that if we just keep doing my way, then I can come and after that, whatever he does feels good!”

Helpful guidelines

One at a Time
Many women find it frustrating when they angle just-so, then their partner adjusts in the same direction and ‘comes with,’ canceling out the effect! But the solution is simple: chat about it so one person tilts at a time.
Fine-tune Any Position
Angling can work in any sexual position, from ordinary to acrobatic. It’s a way women or their partners can make penetration more pleasurable anytime—so have at it!
Time to Revisit
Once you figure out what angles feel best, it’s worth revisiting sex positions you thought you didn’t like, and adding in angling to see if they can be more pleasurable than you thought.

Most common challenges

Deeper Isn’t Always Better
It’s surprising to many partners that the best-feeling angles usually aren’t the ones that touch deepest. The G-region is most often less than a finger-length in (see G-regions). And the clit is outside. So try not to think just of the deepest reaches (which can actually be uncomfortable) and pay attention to the real hotspots, wherever you find they are.
To Each Their Own Angles
Goes without saying but every angle doesn’t work for everybody. Anatomy varies. If the three angles above don’t work for you, use them as points of reference as you find which angles do work for you.
Chatty Experimentation
Even the best angles might not feel amazing at first. It takes trial and error, giving each time and talking it over to find what feels best. Try making it a game where you take turns tilting forward, backward and sideways, giving each 30 seconds, then saying aloud how each one feels.
